The “Insane Skitzo Adult Costume” not only perpetuates the stereotype that people who are mentally ill are criminal and violent, but it makes light of us and our struggles.
It’s ignorant to think that people with mood disorders can just power through their days with the help of God and the steps. It just doesn’t work that way. Some of us need medication because of our conditions.
This week marks Schizophrenia Awareness Week. Therefore, I bring you this story in hopes of helping to break the stigma. Mental illness in the news is usually reported when something horrific happens. A homicide. A mass shooting. Infanticide. However, mentally ill people are more likely to be victims of violence than perpetrators themselves.
