Rene Russo – whose pivotal roles include such films as Major League, Outbreak, Thor and the Lethal Weapon movies as well as the new flick Nightcrawler – let the bipolar cat out of the bag on the Queen Latifah Show. She made the revelation on Monday’s taping of the program.
Former rapper-turned-TV-talk-show-host Queen Latifah asked Russo and Nightcrawler co-star Jake Gyllenhaal – who was also appearing alongside Russo – to reveal something they had to “push through” in their lives. Here’s what Russo had to say…
“I literally crashed, hit a wall and couldn’t get out of bed,” Russo said of her bipolar disorder. “I thought it was depression, but if you take antidepressants it speeds you up more.”
“I haven’t shared this,” the bipolar actress continued. “I have friends who don’t want to go on medication, and they are suffering.”
Rene Russo wanted to let the public know that “It’s OK, you will make it through.”

I am a Behavioral Therapist. I saw 250 patients a week in a hospital setting. I also was the facilitator for 10 Manic Depressive Illness Groups (Bipolar Disorder).I thought I knew everything there was to know about MDI, until I had a double stroke and experienced a manic state that lasted over six months. It was frightening to say the least. But exciting at the same time. Things seemed to be clearer in my mind.I felt it was easier to solve problems in general. Everyone experiences depression, but no has highs that completely “take over” their lives. Unless they are ill. Even with two members of my family in the medical profession, and being under the care of six doctors, no one did a thing to help me. That was the the real terror.
Soterios. Thanks for commenting. How are you feeling now?
