Ethan is a thirtysomething Harvard-educated heroin junkie. While he is sober and stable now, he wasn’t always. Here is an excerpt from the forthcoming book The Eccentrics in which he relays one of his grandiose rock-bottoms.
From Chapter 7, The Jetsetter:
California. 2005. SFO airport. High on ketamine. Manic. He was wearing sunglasses and a crimson bathrobe with nothing on underneath. Armed with $20,000 in his pockets, he was determined to fly to South America.
I was trying to buy a first-class one-way ticket to Buenos Aires with no luggage,” says Ethan, a thirty something Renaissance man who looks like a Brooklyn hipster and has bounced around the world. “I was waving around what I thought was my passport and it turned out it was a press pass from college.” Ethan never made it to Argentina that day. Instead, the police took him to a psych ward. Rehab followed.
